Hey Upfront, What Makes Your Bars Safe For Coloured Hair?

The first time I coloured my hair, I was 13 and I wanted to be blonde more than anything. Oh man, it did not work. My hair is decidedly orange in my 7th grade school photo. When I was in high school, I started colouring it consistently. I’m not sure where the impulse came from exactly, but I always felt I was meant to be a natural redhead. I think I started in 2009, and spent the next eight years recommitting to being a ginger every month or two. In 2017, I felt like a change, and decided to go with something a little more vibrant. After experimenting with several colours, I settled on the Radiant Raspberry I’ve had for the past 3 years. Suffice it to say, I have lots of experience colouring my hair, and with all the trials and tribulations that come with it.

One of my biggest struggles is with frizzy hair. Dyeing your hair consistently can be very drying, especially if you aren’t choosing the right shampoo. For many years, I’ve been careful to choose a shampoo & conditioner that are “colour-safe”, but I never really gave much thought to what made it better for my hair. When I started working with Upfront Cosmetics, I of course switched to the bar shampoo. My mind was blown how much softer it felt after just one wash! I knew about Upfront’s colour-safe guarantee, but why did it seem to be so much more nourishing than my old liquid shampoo?

Without telling tales out of school and naming names, I’ll just say that my liquid shampoo wasn’t as colour safe as it touted itself, and that comes down to just one group of ingredients. It’s something we’ve discussed on the blog before. That’s right, the second ingredient in my liquid shampoo, after water, was sodium laureth sulfate.

If you don’t remember from our post on the subject, sulfates are detergents, also known as surfactants, added to formulas to increase lather. They’re great at stripping your hair of not just dirt and grime, but also the natural oils that keep it healthy, making your hair feel rough, dry, and brittle. And guess what else they’re good at stripping your hair of? Colour!

That’s right! Upfront’s sulfate-free promise is exactly what makes our bars safe for colour-treated hair! Since I've made the switch and broke up with my liquid shampoo, my is noticeably softer and healthier, and less frizzy. I've also noticed that I can go a little bit longer before my colour is faded enough to dye it again. I'd happily recommend Upfront shampoo and conditioner bars to anybody, including my rainbow haired friends and family!
